Getting Revenge on Montezuma:
Tips for avoiding and curing Gringo Stomach Ailments in Mexico and Central America

By Kent St. John,

No doubt when youve informed your friends and family youre headed anywhere in Central America youll hear horror stories about "the revenge." Its also know as diarrhea or tourist belly. If you follow some precautions you have a great chance to avoid the dreaded travelers nightmare.
First and foremost "if in doubt do without." If a kitchen or food stall looks the least bit unsanitary move on. Beware of raw, reheated, or uncooked meat, fish, eggs, raw vegetables, and salads, especially if they have been left out in the open.
Even in the large cities drink bottled or purified water. If ice cubes are machine made I dont worry, but if ice is chipped off a large block do without.
Wash your hands with obsession. Better yet, carry anti-bacterial pads and use them before and after eating.
Years ago, I was told by an old expat in Mexico that a few cervezas (beers) with lime will guarantee protection. I choose to believe him. It must work; I have eaten everything from grasshoppers to guinea pig and never been ill if I washed it down with beer and a lime wedge.
If you do manage to be caught by Montezuma, here are a few treatments that have been known to help travelers.
- Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water.
- I like to start a treatment with plain baking soda. Its gentle and the salts help keep you hydrated.
- If using Imodium A-D or Pepto-Bismol purchase some Salvadora mineral salts. Again, staying hydrated is key!
- If the condition should last more than three days, seek medical help. It is very affordable in Central America.
