As a professional photographer and traveler, camera bags are a part of my tool kit and as important as the equipment I carry in them.

They are what gets me and my gear from point A to Point B and back again, safe, dry, and protected. Each destination and photography scenario has its own particular challenges and not every bag can serve all needs. I own many.

Thanks to the folks at Thule and Case Logic, I had a chance to road test a few of their camera bags. My criteria for reviewing is simple, I have to use them in the real world before I will give my opinion and or an endorsement.

Thule and Case logic have a lot going for them. The bags are well thought out, convenient to use and all built with exceptional craftsmanship and materials.

Thule Covert DSLR Rolltop Backpack

This has a unique rolltop like a wet bag, with a good-sized top dry zippered section over a separate “SafeZone removable camera pod system” that holds camera gear. The pod is accessible through a side pocket and is removable to use the entire bag compartment without it.

I used this bag on small lobster boats in rough seas. Very weather-resistant, easy to get equipment in and out, and had room for rain gear, lunch, medkit, etc. Ample front pockets all have solid velcro closures. A versatile, sturdy bag and one of my favorites. Thule Covert DSLR Rolltop Backpack $199.95

Thule Perspektiv DSLR Backpack

I do not think I am worthy of this bag. Sure, I have taken it out in the woods, but it should be on the back of a skier catching air and landing neck deep in powder. It is sleek and stunning.

Welded and taped critical seams, water-repellent fabric, and YKK RCPU zippers. The interior easily held two pro Canon bodies, plus lenses, flashes, etc.

The back padding, straps, and waist belt are thick and comfortable. With attached rain fly, this baby will carry a small studio, resist any weather and look damn good doing it. Thule Perspektiv DSLR Backpack. $249.00

Case Logic Kontrast Pro DSLR Backpack

New addition The Kontrast Pro is a robust camera bag with a large padded interior, easily accessible from the full zippered front, or from Case Logics’ unique top flap that holds up to a camera and 70-200 lens suspended in a padded hammock system.

A “ durabase” water-resistant bottom makes the bag very stable on the ground.

Comfortable to carry and use my only regret was the lack of a waist belt, which limited me from loading it to its full potential.

I walked the rocky coast of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia with this bag.

Very comfortable on my back, It was not large enough to handle the full arsenal of my equipment, and was only able to carry a small tripod comfortably.

That being said it would be perfect for a smaller mirrorless system. Very well built and my new go-to bag when I do not need everything. Case Logic Luminosity Medium DSLR + iPad® Backpack $119.99

Luminosity Large Sling Backpack

With a clever strap system, The Luminosity Large Sling Backpack works both as a sling bag and a functional backpack. Super easy to swing to your side and access the main compartment.

This is a shooters bag that you can use on the fly. I really liked the ability to carry it over long distances on my back, and then switch to a sling for shooting.
